When my husband and I hiked up to this geological wonder we passed lots of prayer cloths tied to tree branches, left there by Native Americans. Lots of Northern Plains tribes called the Devil’s Tower some variation of "Bear Lodge" for the legends of giant bears and the earth protecting people by shooting them up into the sky and out of the way of the bear's claws (hence the grooves in the sides of the butte). The constellation of Ursa Major can be seen from this point as well (and you can see three orbs in the painting).
