deconstructed landscapes

This latest body of work has been an exploration in color and texture and a challenge to let go of the outcomes in my art. As a new mother I've found I have very little control over how my time is spent day-to-day. Anyone with a new baby knows that they are demanding and delightful little creatures, and some days are full of naps while others... not so much. Lately I've been swiping paint at my canvases between nursing, changing diapers, laundry, and lots of baby snuggles. I don't have the bandwidth to put much executive thought into my work, so the resulting paintings are very intuitive and based on snap decisions on what each one needs to feel finished. It's been a playful and therapeutic experience for me and I am enjoying these first forays into abstraction from more traditional landscape painting as I also step into motherhood.

These paintings are directly inspired by places in and near Butte County, where I’ve called home for most of my life and where my husband and son were both born.
